Cause of hot farts and their prevention

Hot farts indicate that a person ate some food that the body could not digest.

People tend to fart quite often or not based on factors which include the type of foods they eat and the way they eat it. But a person may notice that some farts feel warmer or hotter than others. Mostly treatment of hot farts is not required because this symptom generally passes after a bowel movement. But some over-the-counter medications can help to treat continuous farting. In only rare cases a person needs to see a doctor.


The triggers of hot farts are different for different people. Diet has to play a big part in the cause and formation of gas. People may experience multiple levels of flatulence even after taking the same diet. The digestive system of different individuals reacts in different ways to foods and habits. The hot farts may be accompanied by smells and they vary depending on the type of foods a person eats and how their bodies respond to it.

These are some possible causes of hot farts:-


Spicy foods can trigger hot farts directly in many people as they have compounds that cause sensitivity issue. If a meal is spicy according to the person eating it, then it may feel spicy when they pass it later in faeces. It is also applicable to the gas formed from the food. The spice compounds in hot foods make the rectum and anus more sensitive which can make a person feel the fart to be hotter. This symptom can be cured by clearing the spice by a bowel movement.


Diarrhea is a sign of an upset digestive system and it has many triggers for it. Diarrhea makes the intestines, the rectum and anus very sensitive. It makes a person feel a fart as it is passed which is kind of a hot fart. This fart is accompanied by a foul smell or sour stomach.


When we eat food or drink that the body does not digest easily it causes many symptoms which include diarrhea, upset stomach and hot farts. Some of it’s examples include taking milk or dairy products in lactose-intolerant people.

In these cases the gas a person releases feels warm. It can also smell foul or sour and can have other symptoms like diarrhea. A person who feels that he/she is having a food intolerance must keep a food journal to track their diet and symptoms.


It is an immune disorder that causes the body to react to gluten. People having this condition have gluten damage and cause inflammation to the small intestine which leads to other symptoms like hot and foul gas. Celiac disease is a chronic condition and it’s treatment requires removing gluten from the diet totally.


Sometimes a warm or hot fart may occur because of low intestinal gas. Many factors affect the gaseousness of a person starting from how much air they swallow while chewing the many types of foods and drinks they consume. A person with less intestinal gas may feel their farts to be warmer as there is not much gas in the rectum to get expelled by force. It may cause the warm gas to come out more slowly which makes the fart to feel warmer.


If a person wears thick, tight pants or underwear it can also cause a fart to feel warmer as the gas lingers around the anus after coming out of the body. In such cases there are no other symptoms like an upset stomach or foul smell. It’s just that the warm air of the fart does not leave immediately making the person feel warm for a longer period of time.


Irregularity and constipation may cause many digestive symptoms including warmer farts. It occurs due to the slowing down of the digestive system which leaves less space for gas and makes it’s passing process more difficult. When the gas does come out it is in smaller amounts leading to the feel of a hot fart. The remedy for constipation will provide relief from this uncomfortable condition.


Hot farts do not require any treatment. Farts on their own are not dangerous on their own as they don’t show any sign of severe illness on their own. But if there are strange smells or other signs accompanying a fart it indicates a more serious underlying condition like food intolerance.Hot fart symptoms are generally temporary and pass out after the movement of a bowel.In cases of diarrhea it is required to stay hydrated.One should drink lots of mineral water and drinks with electrolytes which may help to restore hydration and salts in the body.Sometimes over-the-counter drugs may help to ease other issues like an upset stomach or indigestion.Certain ingredients like bismuth subsalicylate(Pepto Bismol) and calccium carbonate(Tums or Rolaids) can help to give relief from additional symptoms.

Doctors on suspicion of an underlying issue like Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS) may advise a low FODMAP diet which helps to remove offending foods that trigger symptoms.


Hot farts can be checked by making changes in diets and lifestyles. Steps need to be taken towards optimal digestive health. Some helpful tips for this are—1.Eat plenty of dietary fibre.

2.Eat fermented foods or take probiotic supplements to promote the gut Microbiome.

3.Eat foods and herbs that reduce flatulence.

4.Eat less of foods causing formation of extra gas like sugars and other carbohydrates.

5.Eat dietary enzymes when eating foods which are difficult to digest.

6.Avoid foods that upset the digestive system like spicy foods.

7.Drink more water.

8.Avoid gassy drinks like carbonated water or soda.

9.Wear loose fitting and comfy clothing.

10.Keep a food journal to help identify and remove problematic foods.


Hot farts in themselves are not dangerous enough and the condition subsides when the offending food material is passed out as faeces. But if a person is having a consistent fart problem accompanied by other underlying symptoms then he/she must speak to a doctor or dietician to treat the condition.
