Keep the disease at bay: Don’t forget an apple a day!

We all know the famous expression, ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’. It is not just an expression but has real value too. Apples add immunity to our body and nourish it. They are what one should be eating anytime, anywhere because it’s potential to cure us and keep us healthy is unlimited. 

Apples are rich in fibers, vitamins, and minerals and provide vast amounts of antioxidants. These substances help neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are reactive molecules that may build up naturally or by environmental pressures and if too many free radicals accumulate in the body it can cause oxidative stress which can lead to ultimate cell damage. This cell damage can lead to conditions like cancer and diabetes.

Apple has a range of antioxidants like quercetin, catechin, phloridzin, chlorogenic acid. Quercetin has a neuroprotective effect and it helps neurons to survive and function thus preventing age-related neuron loss. It also helps protect cells from Alzheimer’s disease. 

The benefits of eating an apple are—

Stroke

It has been found out by studies that people who ate apples had a lower risk of thrombotic stroke. Apples have many nutrients that lower the risk of stroke. It was also found that people who consumed apple having fiber had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and stroke. An apple provides 4.37 gm of fiber.

Cholesterol

According to a study eating raw apples lowered levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol among people.

Heart health

Apples have fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, and potassium. Fiber maintains blood pressure which reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which too helps to keep the heart-healthy. It also boosts the immune system and helps the body to manage infections and other diseases. Potassium relaxes the blood vessels, reducing the risk of high blood pressure and other complications.

Diabetes

 According to research, it was found that people who replaced three servings of fruit juice with the same amount of whole of an apple had a 7% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than those who did not consume it at all.

Cancer

By taking antioxidant-rich foods one can prevent oxidative stress and may stop the development of certain cancers. And apples are just the right source of antioxidants. Consuming apples may help lower the risk of lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer.

Obesity

Apples contain bioactive compounds that help to promote healthy gut bacteria which may help people with obesity.

Some risks here and there by apples

Some people may find that apples don’t suit them at all. Some of the risks associated with eating apples are—

Toxins

Apple seeds have cyanide. Chewing and swallowing large amounts of apple seeds can be dangerous.

Allergies

Some people may have an allergic reaction when they eat apples. So a person who starts experiencing hives, swelling, or has problems in breathing should seek immediate doctor’s advice.

Teeth

The acidic nature of apples may help in plaque buildup. So one should rinse their mouths with water or brush their teeth for some time after eating the apple.

Choking

Some people, children, and adults too have a problem swallowing food particles. So they should not eat raw apple pieces.

Something about apple peels

The peels of apples are edible and have many beneficial nutrients like fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. One should not peel the apples because it lowers the fiber and overall nutrient content of the fruit. According to research though both the flesh and the peel have certain flavonoid antioxidants that the flesh does not have. To get the most out of an apple one must eat the peel too.

Conclusion

So apples are chewy, tasty, and look good too. They have so many nutrients and they provide a lot of energy. It is one of the most nutritious fruits found on earth. So in any kind of sickness, a meal consisting of an apple is surely given. We must know how beneficial it is to eat an apple to stay fit, happy, and healthy.
