Mental Illness dilemma: Is mental illness curable?

Mental health is the foundation for emotions, thinking, communication, learning, resilience and self-esteem. Mental health is also the backbone to relationships, personal and emotional well-being which contribute to the betterment of self, community and society. Many people have mental illnesses but are shy about it which refrains them to talk about it. But it is nothing to be ashamed of. It is just another health disorder like heart disease and diabetes. Mental health conditions are treatable. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate and can affect anyone of any age, gender, geography, income, social status, race/ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, background etc.Though mental illness can be got at any age but three-fourths of them begin by the age of 24.

Mental illness is a serious issue which needs to be considered seriously and not be ignored. One tends to feel hopeless and perplexed when he/she is experiencing a mental breakdown.We all want wholeheartedly for the disease to end or go away permanently but it is not so easy really.

Treatment vs cure

By cure of a disease it is meant that the disease is gone forever.But some illnesses can’t be cured totally like diabetes.Once a person gets diabetes they will have it for the rest of their lives.But it too despite being a lifelong ailment can be treated.People taking their medications on time and making some lifestyle changes can live long and healthy lives.This part of medication and lifestyle changes are the treatment of the disease.Mental illness too is of the same kind.There is no cure for mental illness but there are many effective treatments for diabetes.People with mental illnesses can recover and live long and fruitful lives.

The treatment for mental illnesses includes lifestyle changes,support groups,medications and therapy.

How to treat mental illness?

 Generally for most of the people a combination of lifestyle changes,therapy,medications and support are helpful for treating mental illness.

1.Lifestyle changes

Our habits and routines can have a big impact on our mental health.You must make sure to get regular sleep,eat a healthy diet,exercise regularly.The use of caffeine,alcohol,or drugs must be stopped.Meditation,yoga and spiritual practices will also prove to be helpful. You should pay attention to simple things like taking care of yourself,doing and enjoying activities that you like and spending time in a good environment.

2.Therapy

Therapy can also be a great option to change behaviors,gain self-confidence,learn new skills and talk with a person openly and honestly. There are many different types of therapy.The therapists use many techniques depending on the needs of the person they are working with.The commonest type of therapy is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT).In a CBT a therapist helps you examine your thoughts and beliefs and how these influence your behavior.

3.Medication

One of the other options is to take medications. There are many different mental health medications to help with many kinds of symptoms. Medications affect everyone differently so not each medication will be good for you and many of them will have side effects.

4.Support

 It’s important to find support from others. It can come through family, friends, professionals or support groups. The support groups are made up of individuals with the same experiences who meet regularly to discuss their experiences. By talking to people who are going through the same things can make you feel less lonely and more connected and in the moment.
